Becoming Our Home

A tale of first-time homeowners

Bill’s Wedding January 3, 2009

Bob and I had quite an adventure this week for Bill’s wedding. On the 26th, our flight was delayed 4 hours from Atlanta to Newark, NJ. By the time we got there, we had missed our connection to Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada. There is only 1 flight to Moncton from Newark each day, so we were kinda stuck. Bill suggested that we fly into Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada and rent a car or catch a train to Miramichi, New Brunswick, Canada. Well, by the time we got into Halifax, it was almost 1 am. There were no cars left to rent. So we were kinda stuck in the airport until we hopped on a random bus that took us to a hotel that actually had a room! In the morning we had to take a train ride to Moncton to pick up our rental car so we could actually have a means of transportation once we got to Miramichi. It took us about 5 hours on the train. It was fun to see all the country side. Very pretty and snowy.

On the Train

Once we got to Moncton, we had to take a taxi to the airport due to no buses. On our 2+ hour drive to Miramichi, we ran into a blizzard. It was quite entertaining to listen to the radio announcers say that people shouldn’t be on the road tonight. Bob did all the driving. It was definitely hard to see! Plus there were signs every couple of miles warning about Moose crossing the freeway. So we had to deal with driving in a blizzard at night and watching for moose :)

When we got to Miramichi, the first thing we looked for was a Wal-Mart! I can’t believe that’s what we did, but we were desperate for something to eat and a change of clothes. Did I mention that our suitcases were lost too! The airline drove them out to us the next day. It took us 36 hours to get to from Atlanta to Miramichi. We were very tired when we got in.

The next couple of days was pretty uneventful. Bob had Bill’s bachelor party, where they all wore tuxedo t-shirts that I made and tied a bowling ball around his ankle. Then they took him bowling (Thin Pin Bowling), but first they got kicked out of the Church’s cemetery. haha. I had a relaxing evening of watching tv and eating ice cream.

The wedding went well. Bob spiced up the reception by shaving one of his legs and tying a garter around it. The idea was to blindfold Bill and have him take it off of Bob’s leg. It almost worked, but Bill quickly realized that it wasn’t Bob’s leg. It was so funny to watch!!

After the reception, Bob, Dan, Matt and I piled up into one car, and Bob’s parents, Aunt Leslie, and Nana got into a mini van. Then we began our adventure back to Moncton. We stopped at a Tim Hortons restaurant twice on the way back. Let me tell you about Tim Hortons. Maybe I just had a bad experience, but it wasn’t that good. However, the locals loved it. Give me Starbucks or Panera Bread anyday. These places are everywhere though. It’s like finding a Starbucks in Southern California. They are on every corner.

We got to our hotel around 11pm and got up around 3am to catch our flight to Newark, NJ. We didn’t have any major problems getting back, thankfully.

We got back to our house around 9:30 pm on New Year’s Eve, so our night consisted of us falling asleep on the couch and waking up about 10 mins before the ball dropped. We’re party animals! haha.

So that’s some of our adventure. Not all of it, but I hit some of the highlights. Didn’t want to bore you to much :)
